Part-Time Employment Opportunity: Working Boarder

Location: Berryville, VA

Compensation: $20.00 – $25.00/hour (commensurate with experience)

Board Rate: $250/month (Mount Hebron’s self-care rate)

Schedule: Initial base schedule of 1 hour every day, with the opportunity to add hours as our retirement boarding program grows.

Position Overview

Mount Hebron Farm is seeking an experienced, community-oriented, detail-driven, reliable individual for a Working Boarder position. We are currently augmenting our traditional self-care options to include more involved care for retiree horses. This position is designed for an individual who wishes to board their horse on-site while providing daily operational and horse care assistance.

The barn owner retains full management and handles direct communication with boarders. This role is strictly focused on hands-on care, maintenance, and facility upkeep.


Qualifications

  • Experience: Strong practical horse-handling experience, particularly with senior or retired horses.

  • Attributes: Must be highly detail-oriented, dependable, and possess a caring approach to horse care. A community-oriented, caring mindset is essential for fitting into our farm culture.

  • Physical Requirements: Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Verification: Professional and personal references are required and will be contacted during the vetting process.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Daily Care & Monitoring: Perform daily feeding, manage water, and conduct visual health and soundness checks.

  • Senior Care Support: Assist with specialized routines for retiree horses as the program grows, including monitoring blankets/fly masks, and checking for basic health needs.

  • Handling: Safely handle and hold horses for veterinarian, farrier, and other professional visits.

  • Facility Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness and organization in the main barn aisleway, tack room, and feed storage areas.

  • Amenity Upkeep: Perform routine cleaning of the barn restrooms and rider lounge.

  • Grounds Maintenance: Keep the immediate perimeter of the barn tidy, including weeding and clipping the barn garden beds.

  • General Support: Monitor fence lines, report maintenance issues to management, and assist with general barn chores as required.
